2021 ISTE Making It Happen Winners

  • Wendy Drexler

    Senior Educational Advisor - Johns Hopkins University and Ed Tech Consultant

    Dr. Wendy Drexler has been a champion for empowered online learning for over 20 years. As assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University, she redesigned and managed the Digital Age Learning and Educational Technology MS Program. Prior to that, Wendy served as ISTE’s chief innovation officer and continues to serve as ISTE faculty. As director of online development at Brown University, she led the design and production of Brown’s first online master’s degree programs. As a post doc at the University of Florida, she managed the research portion of the Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) federal Title II grant across 23 school districts in Florida. Wendy has taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels in both public and independent school settings. As a high school teacher, she developed the first blended learning courses for Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg. Her research interests include student construction of personal learning environments, balancing teacher control with student agency and advancing the processes that support empowered online learning.

  • Janice Mak

    Janice Mak

    Teacher and Arizona State Board of Education Member

    Janice is a K–12 teacher and member of the Arizona Board of Education from Phoenix, Arizona. Her vision and work has been to create and sustain inclusive and equitable STEM+CS learning opportunities where every student is empowered to be a creator of and with technology. This has led her to collaborate with state, national and international partners to ensure teachers have access to the standards, resources and support they need to implement engaging and innovative classroom experiences. She is honored to serve on several boards and initiatives, including ISTE's Computational Thinking Competencies writing team, Computer Science Teachers Association board, NCWIT K-12 Alliance leadership team, National Science Teaching Association Technology Advisory Board, University of Arizona's Data Sciences Academy design team, and as a collaborator on Arizona State University's higher education partnership with Morocco to support development of preservice elementary teacher pathways. Most recently, she was invited to chair the Arizona Department of Education's technology task force where she collaborated with stakeholders to address issues related to the digital divide.

  • Jorge Valenzuela

    Education Coach, Author and Advocate, Lifelong Learning Defined

    Jorge Valenzuela is an education coach, author, and advocate. He has years of experience as a classroom and online teacher, a curriculum specialist and a consultant. His work focuses on improving teacher preparation in project-based learning (PBL), computational thinking and computer science integration, STEM education, and equity and SEL integration. Jorge is an adjunct professor at Old Dominion University and the lead coach at Lifelong Learning Defined. He has also served as a panel expert for the U.S. Senate and has worked with state policymakers in Virginia. Jorge has written a book, Rev Up Robotics, and jump start guides, Ready, Set, Robotics and SEL in Action. His following two books, which respectively focus on PBL and Equity and SEL Integration, are forthcoming from ISTE and Solution Tree. He contributes to multiple blogs, has appeared on podcasts, and presents at conferences frequently, reaching educators all over the world.
